The First Day of First Grade

Well, we have made it through another first day of school. Today was Kaylee's first day of the 1st grade. She has been very excited about starting school since we went to the meet the teacher night last Thursday. She was able to meet her new teacher, Ms. Doos, and also found out that her best friend from Kindergarten, Grace, is in her class. I think having Grace in her class was a huge relief to her. She has been talking nonstop about going back to school and has been asking Craig and I to talk about what will be happening this year at school for the last several days. I asked her over the weekend how she wanted to be dropped off at school on the first day and she told me to drop her off out front like normal. She said "I'm a big girl, Mom.". So we are driving up to the school this morning and as soon as we hit the parking lot she has a quick change of heart. She starts sobbing and decides she can't do it all by herself. My problem was that I was already in the line to drop off and all of the parking spaces were filled. A few opened up as we were driving up but the cars in front of us ended up taking them. At this point we are getting close to the front doors and the sobbing is getting worse. Lucky for us they did not have the visitor spots blocked off this morning and one of them happened to be open. So we parked the car and got Morgan out and headed in to school. Had I known this was going to be the plan, I might have worn some better workout clothes and maybe put on some makeup. We walked her to her classroom and after a few minutes of crying, prying and goodbyes, Morgan and I were able to head off to the YMCA. Although every time we go into the school Morgan wants to know where her classroom is. She is ready to go to school right now.

When I picked up Kaylee this afternoon and we got to hear about her day it sounded like it went pretty good. They had their first fire drill. Kaylee got to take some papers to the office. They unpacked all of their school supplies. This was fun for Kaylee because we did not buy any of her supplies. The PTA does a program that you pay for the supplies at the end of the year before and then you show up on the first day and all of your supplies are there in a bag. So it was Kaylee's first time to see all of the cool stuff. This is a great way to get your supplies if you are a parent, but probably not as fun for the kids. Kaylee is already getting to know some of the kids at her table that she did not know from last year. She is working very hard at being brave and putting a smile on her face and getting to know new people. It's a hard thing to do, but I'm very proud of her.

I am also going to have a very fun school year, too. I have volunteered to be the 1st Vice President of the PTA. I will be in charge of Ways and Means, which is mostly centered around fundraising. I know the PTA president from last year and she was very excited to hear that I would be willing to do this. I will also be a member of the Fall Festival Committee and probably any other PTA job I am willing to take on. I think that this will be a great opportunity for me to get more involved with the school and get to know more parents and teachers. The great part is I will also get to learn about fundraising and do some party planning (which is one of my strong suits). I'll keep you all posted on my new "job".
